The UK’s James Zabiela is known as a DJ who’s developed such a strong affinity with the machines that help him make all those wonderful noises, that he’s very nearly become a robot himself. Little surprise then that he’s a guy (or cyborg, as the case may be) who shuns the daylight? His history with touring Australia during the ice-cold winter months would suggest exactly that, and he’ll be doing it again this June Long Weekend with a massive tour that will see him play We Love Sounds in Sydney and Adelaide, Winter Sound System in Melbourne and more.
Living the healthy life is not something that immediately springs to mind when imagining what a DJ gets up to, but Chris Lake is one who walks to the beat of a different drum machine. “I’ve been trying to keep healthy, eat well, plus have a half decent routine and it’s making a big difference when I’m in the studio,” he said. This might all sound ho-hum, but it’s exactly what allows Chris to jetset across the globe regularly, as well as consistently pumping out quality productions. A veritable music machine, and on his third visit to Australia shortly to play at We Love Sounds in Sydney, Winter Sound System in Melbourne and more, it seems we’re due to witnesses his newfound lease on life. “I’ve just finished eight tracks in the past month and I’ve some choice numbers to play on this tour,” he told ITM.
The first thing that strikes me when speaking to Dutch underground house duo 16 Bit Lolitas is their passion and enthusiasm for their music. They answer my questions with the confidence and insight bestowed only to those at the top of their game, and that’s exactly where they are right now.
Since forming in 2003, the pair (made up of Ariaan Olieroock and Peter Kriek), have produced a string of successful releases on labels as diverse as Yoshitoshi, Alternative Route, Plastic Fantastic, Nu Republic, Armada, LMR and most recently Above & Beyond’s progressive house offshoot Anjunadeep. They’ve also launched their own successful imprint Bits and Pieces, on which late last year they delivered their superb Live At Warung album, inspired by one of Brazil’s most famous beach clubs. It comprised of a mix featuring underground sounds handpicked from across the globe, alongside an entire disk of their own unreleased material.
